Breakfast in Italy is every bit as quaint and enjoyable as I had envisioned it would be. These past two mornings some of my apartment-mates and I have stopped by bars both in our neighborhood of Trastevere and next to the school for a quick cappuccino and croissants. The photo is from this morning's escapade to Bar Amore next to Piazza dell'Orologio where our cappuccinos came served with cocoa hearts and i cornetti with complimentary nutella. Every cup is strained fresh, you can sip standing at the little counter and drop your Euro coins on the table as you leave, and I'm hoping to get to know the people working at these little stops so I can practice my Italian more frequently (I did ask how Italians pronounce bananas today, that went over well since it's banana). I really need to go grocery shopping because the lack of food in the house is making me utterly miserable when my 3 AM munchies keep me from falling asleep for the rest of the night, so I will probably stock up on some breakfast food then but in the meantime going out to enjoy una colazione economica (a cheap breakfast) and sip on my cappuccino alongside the locals feels like my first step towards integration into the Italian community.
Next time you go to a bar for breakfast, ask if they have toast ('tost'). It's an Italian grilled cheese sandwich made with fontina cheese and prosciutto cotto. A tasty, warm, filling treat for breakfast, or any time during the day! :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful, I will definitely have to keep that on my list of things to try!
